Newtown,South Wales - Drunk repeatedly hit man with spanner in early-hours burglary

Jonathan Rogers, 33, who also tried to throttle the victim on the landing of his home, was jailed for seven years

A drunk who attacked a man with a spanner after breaking into his home in the early hours of the morning has been jailed for seven years.
Former businessman Jonathan Rogers, 33, also tried to throttle the victim on the landing of his home.
Judge Rhys Rowlands, sitting at Mold Crown Court , warned the defendant that he would have received a 10 and a half year sentence if he had been convicted after trial.
Rogers, of no fixed abode, admitted entering a dwelling at Orchid Walk in Newtown in Powys on December 30 and inflicting GBH on Jamie Re.
He admitted that, at the time of the burglary, he had with him a weapon of offence, namely a metal implement.
The victim was confronted by the burglar on the landing of his own home after being woken up before 5am by the defendant forcing his way in through the back door.
He saw Rogers approaching and was struck to the side of the head with the weapon.
He fell back and the defendant struck him with the weapon about five times.
Rogers put his hands around the victim’s throat and tried to throttle him but, when the victim managed to push him off, the defendant appeared to come to his senses and left.
He later told police that he had drunk two bottles of vodka and had little recollection of the incident.
“You went there in drink having armed yourself with a metal instrument, most likely to be a ratchet bar from a socket set,” said Judge Rowlands.
Prosecutor David Mainstone said the victim no longer felt safe in his own home.
The court heard the victim was a previous partner of the defendant’s former girlfriend, but Rogers said he had no explanation for what he had done.
Robin Boag, defending, said Rogers had run a ground work company with a business partner, but they got into financial difficulties because people had not paid money they owed.
The company folded, and Rogers experienced relationship problems and turned to drink.
He was resigned to a prison sentence and, in a way, welcomed it as it would give him an opportunity to sort himself out, said Mr Boag.
