A man flew into a rage and threatened to burn down his mother’s house with her in it.
Christine Lindgren blocked her bedroom door with furniture after Cain Trevan-Jones, 21, told her that he would “drink a bottle of bleach” and set the the house at Maelor View, Marchwiel on fire on November 7.
Helen Tench, prosecuting, told magistrates in Wrexham that Trevan-Jones lived at the house with his mother and her husband, who was not in at the time of the incident.
Trevan-Jones, a waiter and barman in Chirk, lost his temper and started shouting and screaming when his mother asked whether he was going to work that day.
She went to her bedroom and Trevan-Jones followed her, making the threat to burn the house down with her in it.
There had been an incident at a previous address where Trevan-Jones had set fire to a bedroom door when his mother was in the room, the court heard.
Mrs Lindgren placed an item of furniture in front of the door to stop her son entering and she could hear banging and crashing on the door.
She had to shout to police through the window when they arrived, Miss Tench added.
Trevan-Jones barricaded the front door and jumped out of a window and fled before he was arrested.
Mrs Lindgren said she was “so frightened” of her son when he loses his temper and she was “too poorly to cope” with him and did not want him at the address.
Trevan-Jones, appearing from custody, pleaded guilty at the hearing to making the threat.
Emma Simoes, defending, said that Trevan-Jones had a condition called intermittent explosive disorder, which caused him to “explode with bursts of anger, often to the point of rage, that are disproportionate to the situation”.
Trevan-Jones had no control over the outbursts due to his condition, Miss Simoes said.
He sometimes had blackouts and could not remember what he said.
While Trevan-Jones did not recall what had been said, he had told Miss Simoes that what was alleged was something he could have said and did not wish to put his mother through giving evidence at a trial.
Magistrates heard that Trevan-Jones loved his mother, who also has health problems.
He was lost without his mother and they helped each other, Miss Simoes added.
Mrs Lindgren is a carer and advocate for her son, who also has autism and ADHD, and organised his medication and finances.
She had not asked police for a restraining order against her son.
Trevan-Jones, Miss Simoes said, was “polite and courteous” but there was another side to his character which upset him and he accepted that he needed help.
“He is very remorseful for putting his mother through any undue distress,” she added.
Probation officer Pamela Roberts told magistrates that Trevan-Jones, who came to live in the area from the USA aged 16 years when he was adopted, had told her that a disagreement over work had escalated.
Trevan-Jones told Miss Roberts that he hoped to get alternative medication in a bid to alter his behaviour.
Magistrates imposed a 12-month community order with a 15-day rehabilitation activity requirement.
Roy Dolan, chair of the bench, told Trevan-Jones: “You’re sailing very close to the wind for custody, I will tell you that for nothing.
“If you get into any trouble again, the outcome looks very bleak.”
Trevan-Jones was ordered to pay £85 costs and an £85 victim surcharge.
