A MAN who was said to have an addiction to ‘ordinary porn’ began to look at images of child sex abuse for his sexual gratification.
Geraint Williams was yesterday spared immediate imprisonment and was sent on an internet sex offenders’ course to try to tackle his issues.
Judge Niclas Parry, sitting at Mold Crown Court yesterday, told Williams, 27, of Highmore Court in Hightown, Wrexham, that his case underlined the real danger of internet porn which was so freely available.
He said Williams’ viewing of porn had desensitised him to what was right and what was wrong: “Your attitude has clearly become distorted as far as sex is concerned.”
The judge said Williams had viewed images from a young age.
It was a serious case with a high number of category A images and there was a very high overall number of more than 600.
“You need to understand that children as young as six were actually subjected to what you were enjoying viewing,” Judge Parry told Williams.
It was a case that had to be marked by a custodial sentence because of the number of images involved but he would receive maximum credit for his guilty pleas, he had been frank and open from the start, he was a man of good character and a hard worker.
Any custodial sentence, in view of the sentencing guidelines, would mean his early release back into the community.
“The alternative is to address the underlying issues that clearly affect you,” he said.
“I take the view the public would be far better served by onerous demands being made upon you.”
For that reason he would receive a 12 month prison sentence, suspended for a year. He would be sent on the internet community sex offender programme, to be completed within two years and he would be placed on rehabilitation.
Williams was placed on the sex register for 10 years and a 10 year Sexual Offences Prevention Order was also made.
Barrister Hannah Horton, prosecuting, said Williams had pleaded guilty at Wrexham Magistrates Court to four offences of making indecent images, two charges of possessing prohibited images of children and four offences of possessing extreme images involving sex between humans and animals.
There were 75 images at the most serious category A, 36 at category B and 546 at category C. They were mainly images of girls aged between six and 15.
Miss Horton said police executed a warrant at his home at 8am on May 19 and here were 92 extreme images, 59 extreme videos and 17 prohibited images of children.
Barrister James Coutts, defending, said his client found himself in a serious situation but it was clear he had underlying issues which needed to be addressed. He was motivated to address them and he had himself been trying to stop.
“He knows he has a problem. It started off as an addiction to normal or ordinary porn,” Mr Coutts said. “Unfortunately it spiralled out of control.
He added Williams would welcome help from the probation service.
