Karina Johnson said she had been seeing stabbing victim Clint Simms for about two months before the incident in Ely
A woman has described the moment a man accused of murder stabbed her boyfriend to the chest in broad daylight on a street in Cardiff .
Giving evidence at Cardiff Crown Court , Karina Johnson said she had been seeing Clint Simms for about two months before he was stabbed by defendant Stephen Pike .
Ms Johnson said she was a passenger in a white van with Mr Simms and his friend Peter McGovern on the morning of the incident on March 3.
She told the court driver Mr McGovern parked up outside an address in Mill Road in Ely , which belonged to the defendant, whose nickname is “Beano”.
The witness said: “Clint got out and kicked the bottom of the door. He wasn’t booting it – he just tapped it with his foot.”
Ms Johnson, who was sitting in the back of the Fiat Doblo van, said she saw the incident through the vehicle’s window.
She added: “Beano came out and stabbed him. He got the knife and just stabbed him in the chest. ”
The witness said Mr McGovern tried to separate the men and helped Mr Simms back into the van.
Ms Johnson added: “The door was open and Beano started attacking Clint in the van – punching him.”
The court heard Mr McGovern then drove Mr Simms to his mother’s house in Glyndwr Road.
Ms Johnson said: “I saw blood on Clint’s face. He wasn’t speaking or anything. They took him out of the van and there was no response at all.
“I didn’t see any injuries but I didn’t want to look. I just waited for the police to come.”
Mr Simms, a 39-year-old father of five, was pronounced dead by paramedics at 12.15pm.
Pike was arrested and interviewed at Cardiff Bay Police Station the following day and a transcript of the interview was read out in court.
T he defendant told officers he was “absolutely stunned” he had been arrested on suspicion of murder.
He added: “I didn’t know any damage had been done. I saw an injury to his eye but, looking back, I think that could have been an old wound.”
Pike told officers he had been asleep in his flat when lodger James Manfield woke him, saying “people are banging the door down”.
He claimed there was a “constant booting” at the door and the lock was giving way.
Pike said the man at the door claimed his name was Ben but when he looked through the peephole he recognised Mr Simms.

He added: “He had a knife – a good 12-incher – in his jacket and he was saying ‘You’re a dead man’.
“I was petrified because he had robbed me before and broke my ribs. I was in fear for my life.”
Pike told officers he picked up two knives and accepted a “punching match” took place.
He said he did not know how many punches he had thrown, adding he was “acting out of bravado”.
The defendant said: “I honestly didn’t know he was injured – it happened so quick. I didn’t believe I had committed a crime or anything.”
Pike accepts stabbing Mr Simms but denies murder and an alternative charge of manslaughter, claiming he was acting in self-defence.
The case continues.
