Cardiff,South Wales - Suspicious cuts' found on cat whose body was put in a box and left in front of owner's front door

Ernie's body was left in a box outside owner Rebecca Manley's doorstep

A vet said Ernie's wounds had gone 'through to the bone' and were not caused by a car or a wild animal

When Rebecca Manley opened her front door to find a box on her doorstep with her cat’s collar on top she half knew what to expect.
Ginger and white Ernie, her two-year-old daughter’s cat, had not come home the night before and Rebecca had started to fear the worst.
The dead cat’s body was left in a box outside the family home in Canton, Cardiff , after a passer-by saw him lying in a nearby street.
Rebecca instantly thought Ernie had been run over by a car but after taking his body to a vet it was confirmed he had “suspicious cuts” on him - including one which had gone through to the bone.

'I knew straight away it was Ernie in the box'

“I opened the door and there was a box on our front door and it had Ernie’s collar on it,” 30-year-old Rebecca explained. “I knew straight away it was Ernie in the box.
“The person who left him on the doorstep came round the next day and explained he found him on Cowbridge Road East.”
The family’s postcode and house number were written on Ernie’s red collar, which is how the passer-by was able to trace the owner.
Shaken and upset, Rebecca phoned a local vet and was advised to take him in so that he could be buried or cremated.
As part of the process the vet had to carry out a check on Ernie.

Two-year-old Phoebe is "heartbroken" after Ernie died
“I thought he had been run over,” Rebecca added. “They checked Ernie and then the vet took me into another room and said he wasn’t run over but there were wounds on him.”

The marks would have not been caused by an accident or wild animal

The RSPCA are now appealing for information and have confirmed “suspicious cuts” were found on Ernie.
They described one of the cuts as having “gone through to the bone”.
RSPCA deputy chief inspector Gemma Black said: “The marks on Ernie are suspicious as the vet is confident that they would have not been caused by a road traffic accident or by a wild animal.
“The vet also believes that Ernie could have been alive when it happened.”
Ernie left the house at around 8pm on Sunday and the passer-by found him in between two parked cars on Cowbridge Road East, between York Street and Clive Road, on Monday.
Ernie was bought as a first birthday present last year for Rebecca’s daughter, Phoebe, who is “heartbroken” following the incident.
The RSPCA are asking anyone who might have any information to contact them on 0300 123 8018.
