Anglesey,North Wales - Cannonball run! Thieves in Anglesey make off with 17th-century relic

Cannon at Anglesey Sea Zoo, cannon ball was stolen

The cannonball, which was recovered from the sea off Trearddur Bay, was taken from the Anglesey Sea Zoo in Brynsiencyn

Thieves who made off with a 17th-century cannonball from an Anglesey attraction have been blasted by the owners.
The relic was nabbed from outside Anglesey Sea Zoo at some point in the last week.
It had been in place less than a month after divers from Anglesey donated the find to the Brynsiencyn business.
They recovered it from the sea more than a year ago.
It was soaked in fresh water in an attempt to “leach the salt water out of it”, said Martin Sampson of the Anglesey Divers.
“It was a bit bigger than the size of a fist,” he said.
“It was not spherical. It can almost look egg-shaped because of the way they’ve been damaged in the storms.”
A cannon dating back about 400 years has been in place for years at the Sea Zoo.
The divers found the cannonball and thought it should go next to the cannon, which was found at the same shipwreck site.
A spokesman for Anglesey Sea Zoo appealed for the relic to be returned.
“The cannon ball was found and given to us a few weeks ago,” she said.
“It’s worth nothing to anybody but it’s got a lot of value to us.
“It went well with the cannon. It had been cleaned and restored and we glued it down.
“We’re all gutted it has gone missing. We think it’s been stolen as it’s not the sort of thing to just roll away.
“If whoever has taken it can just return it, there will be no questions asked.”
The cannon was found one mile west of Trearddur Bay from an area called “the cannon site”.
It is one of three cannon found in a gully near a round-topped rock with a heap of cannon balls.
According to local history, a French ship attempted to hold the villagers of Holyhead harbour to ransom in the 17th century.
He was unsuccessful and, while trying to escape, the ship got into difficulty around South Stack rocks.
In order to make the ship lighter, the cannon were thrown overboard.
