Think it's pushing it out a bit by calling it one of Wales Best Hotels!
The four-star Vale Resort in the Vale of Glamorgan was given the lowest possible rating for food hygiene during an inspection in September
One of Wales’ most respected hotels was recently handed a food hygiene rating of zero.
The four-star Vale Resort in the Vale of Glamorgan , which boasts a 650-acre golf course along with a luxury spa and a 400-year-old castle in its grounds, was given the lowest possible rating for food hygiene during an inspection in September.
The zero rating, given by the Food Standards Agency, states that “urgent improvement is necessary”.
A spokesman for the resort has said the issue was “addressed immediately” and the hotel “has since been re-rated”.
Inspectors confirmed the hotel “has now rectified the non-compliances identified relating to cleanliness and food hygiene” and was training staff on a new system, adding that a new food hygiene rating would be issued shortly.
The resort, in Hensol, has often been the choice of hotel for the Wales rugby team and they will be based there for the next month.
Gareth Bale and the rest of Wales’ Euro 2016 stars are also due to stay there from Monday.
Inspection by food safety officer
Football teams including Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal and Bale‘s Real Madrid have all stayed in the hotel, which is widely considered one of Wales’ best.
Cardiff City and Cardiff Blues are also regular visitors at the resort, which opened in 1994.
The food hygiene rating is given based on an inspection by a food safety officer.
The hygienic handling of food, including preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage, was found to be in need of “major improvement”.
It also found “major improvement necessary” in the management of food safety.
This includes the system or checks which are in place to ensure that food sold or served is safe to eat and evidence that staff know about food safety.
The food safety officer must also have confidence that standards will be maintained in future.
Cleanliness and the condition of facilities and buildings was rated “improvement necessary” after the officer assessed aspects such as having appropriate layout, ventilation, hand-washing facilities, and pest control to enable good food hygiene.
The inspection was carried out on September 15 but the hotel has now been reinspected and a new rating is due to be issued.
"Addressed immediately"
Vale Resort sales and marketing director Paul Beddoe said: “This issue arose several weeks ago and was addressed immediately. The hotel has since been re-rated.”
The Welsh Rugby Union’s Wales team manager, Alan Phillips, added: “All we can comment on is our experiences at the Vale Resort and the level of service and quality of food continues to be of highest order.
“As a squad we spend a lot of time in hotels around the world and as far as I am concerned the Vale is one of the best we have experienced.”
A spokesman for Shared Regulatory Services – a partnership between Bridgend, Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan councils – said: “Officers from Shared Regulatory Services inspected the Vale Hotel in September and found a number of non-compliances with food hygiene legislation.
“Consequently the premises were given a food hygiene rating of zero – urgent improvement required.
“The hotel is displaying the rating at the premises and the information is available online.
“In recent weeks the SRS team has been working with the hotel to assist them in improving operating procedures and to help them to reach the highest food hygiene standards.
“The hotel has now rectified the non-compliances identified relating to cleanliness and food hygiene and is in the process of training all their operatives against a new food safety management system.
“The Vale Hotel has been inspected for a second time and we will be issuing a new food hygiene rating shortly.”
