Wales,UK - Welsh fire services rescued three times the number of obese patients as London despite a population three times smaller

more than 100 people in South Wales have been rescued from their own homes by fire service since 2013 - because they're obese
Welsh fire services had to remove more obese people from their homes than any other service in the UK.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service had the highest number of bariatric rescues of any service in Britain

Between them, South Wales Fire and Rescue Service and Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service carried out 123 rescues in 2015-16.
The London Fire Brigade carried out 38.
But that brigade covers a population of 8.7 million people. The two Welsh forces cover a population of 2.5 million.
The figures were obtained by BBC Radio 5 Live .

Twice as many call-outs in South Wales than in London

In 2015-2016, South Wales Fire and Rescue had to rescue 77 people because they were too large to move or had become stuck in their homes.
Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue were called out 46 times.
According to the figures obtained by the BBC the number of incidents across the UK have risen from 709 in 2012-13 to 944 in 2015-16.
This includes fire services having to use lifting equipment or being forced to remove windows, walls and banisters in some cases to be able to move obese patients.

'We sometimes remove the window frame'

Chris Jones, watch manager from South Wales Fire Service, told the BBC: "Some of these incidents have become protracted overnight while we've needed to change certain elements to the building to make that rescue safe before we can bring the patient out.
"If we are doing what we call an external rescue where we're taking the patient out through a window, quite commonly we'll remove the window frame itself and we will actually sometimes drop courses of brickwork down to create that space.
"Internally we might have to take doors off, move furniture, we may even have to put supporting systems into the house to make sure everything's structurally sound as well."
