A MAN whose life took a "downward spiral" assaulted his partner by punching her in the face following a row.
Joshua Charles Jones had assaulted Rachael Paget at her home in Conduit Street, Taibach, on August 28, after a 'verbal argument' began.
Abul Hussain, prosecuting, told Swansea Magistrates' Court the 26-year-old, of Wern Road in Margam, had "grabbed her by the throat and punched her to the face area", before going to bed, and his victim had then called a relative to come and collect her from the property.
When police were called, officers attended and noticed bruising to her eye and red marks to her neck, added Mr Hussain, and Jones was arrested on suspicion on common assault.

Jones, who pleading guilty to the charge, appeared via video-link.
Mitigating, Christopher Pridham told the court: "Until two months ago this defendant had never troubled the courts.
"To say his life has been on a downward spiral over the last 12 months is an understatement.
"Prior to this relationship, with his former partner he has two young children, owned a house and they went into business, opening tanning shops. He invested a lot of money and from the outside everything was rosy in the garden.
Mr Pridham said Jones's relationship with his former partner broke down and he was left "struggling to cope".
The court was also told he had a previous conviction for common assault, after pushing his former partner's sister and "as a consequence has been frozen out of the business".
Mr Pridham said Jones had "turned to alcohol as a crutch, and clearly alcohol is a problem". He also said there were "possible drug issues".
But he added: "He bitterly regrets his actions on the night in question, and is keen to reconcile with the complainant, but that does not appear reciprocal.
"Both former partners are concerned for Mr Jones and with how his life has gone in the last 12 months".
Chairman of magistrates Alun Williams sentenced Jones to 12 weeks imprisonment, suspended for two years, as well as ordering him to undertake a rehabilitation requirement, and making him subject to a restraining order, until further notice, not to contact Ms Paget, save via their shared child's grandparents, for child contact.
He was also ordered to pay £150 compensation, £85 costs, and a surcharge of £115.
