A CONVICTED arsonist has been sent back to jail after charging at police while wielding three knives.
Officers were forced to use a form of tear gas to stun Arthur Anthony Veysey after a drunken quarrel erupted with his niece and her partner in Kingdom-Owen Street in Cimla.
The couple called police to the street at 10.20pm on June 8 and rushed out to meet them when they arrived.
Swansea Crown Court heard that Veysey, of Moorland Road, Cimla, was bleeding from the back of the head and flew at officers in a rage.
"He was approximately 50 feet from officers; in his hands he was holding three knives, two which were 12 inches long and one which was eight inches long," prosecutor Janet Gedrych explained.
"He then ran towards them shouting 'come on then, come on then'.
"They shouted to put the knives down. He stopped about two metres from the group but would not put the knives down."
Officers sprayed Veysey with CS gas and he was taken to hospital for his head wound. He continued with to be aggressive and threatening and he could not be charged until the next day when he had calmed down.
The court heard that Veysey, aged 31, has 10 previous convictions for 23 offences.
In October 2009 he admitted reckless arson at Swansea Crown Court and was jailed indefinitely for public protection.
He was not released until January 2015.
In mitigation, Robin Rouch said Veysey had not challenged the allegations and had entered an early guilty plea.
He added all three had been injured in the drunken quarrel which led the defendant to "lose his temper" but that Veysey now planned to leave the South Wales area upon his release to stay out of trouble.
Judge Keith Thomas jailed Veysey for 10 months, reduced from 15 months for the early guilty plea, for affray carrying a bladed article.
"Following a dunked and violent argument with your niece and her boyfriend you were described as 'being in a rage'," Mr Thomas told the court.
"You were told to drop the knives but had to be sprayed with CS gas until you were incapacitated and no longer a threat.
"Courts take a serious view of those who take knives into public places, particularly those in a violent state of mind."
