Robert Owens admitted the murder of his mother Iris Owens when he appeared at court via video link

A 47-year-old man from the Cynon Valley has admitted the murder of his mother.
Robert Owens entered the guilty plea before Judge Eleri Rees at Cardiff Crown Court on Friday. Speaking via video link from HM Prison Cardiff, he paused before he said: “Guilty.”
The body of Iris Owens was discovered in Ystrad Mynach, on Tuesday, May 3.
Emergency services were called to the address in Nelson Street at 5.45pm.
During the brief hearing, Owens, from River Row in Abercynon, wore a red T-shirt.
Judge Rees ordered a psychiatric report.

Remanded in custody

Owens was remanded in custody until he is sentenced on October 31 by Mrs Justice Nicola Davies.
Mrs Owens was described by neighbours as “lovely” and “friendly”.
She was an active volunteer for local heritage groups.
