A MAN punched another who he thought was bothering his friend, a court heard.
Curtis Levi Thackaberry, 20, admitted at Wrexham Magistrates Court a charge of assaulting Michael Ellis by beating on September 24.
Helen Tench, prosecuting, said Mr Ellis left the Cunliffe Arms in Wrexham at about 11.30pm and came across of group of three males and two females.
One of the group said to Mr Ellis: “Why did you hit my little girl?”.
When Mr Ellis told the group he did not know what they were talking about, one of the females tried to hit him, Ms Tench added.
Thackaberry then tried to hit Mr Ellis, who stepped back to avoid the blow, the court heard.
However, Thackaberry then hit Mr Ellis on the cheek with another blow. Mr Ellis hit back in self-defence and knocked Thackaberry to the ground.
Thackaberry tried to kick Mr Ellis while still on the floor, the court heard.
Ms Tench told the court Mr Ellis initially did not make a complaint, but pursued the matter after another witness came forward.
In interview, Thackaberry told officers he had drunk eight or nine bottles of Stella Artois. He thought Mr Ellis was “mouthing off” to one of the girls.
Thackaberry told officers Mr Ellis kicked him in the groin while he was on the floor, but accepted he behaved badly.
Ian Barnes, defending, told the court Thackaberry’s only previous brush with the law had been a recent caution for a dissimilar matter.
Mr Barnes said a clue to Thackaberry’s recent behaviour was the break-up of his parents’ relationship, for which he blamed himself.
On the night in question Thackaberry, who is due to start work on a construction site when he completes a building qualification, was walking along the road and saw one of his friends was in an altercation.
He did not know the extent of the incident and unfortunately tried to involved himself in it, Mr Barnes added, saying Thackaberry would not have become involved if sober.
Mr Barnes said Thackaberry apologised for his actions.
District Judge Gwyn Jones fined Thackaberry £120 and ordered him to pay £100 in compensation to Mr Ellis.
He must also pay a £150 criminal court charge and a £20 statutory surcharge.
