Five elderly women were targeted by purse-snatchers operating in Llandudno and Conwyover the weekend
Police are urging shoppers to be vigilant after the thefts, which left all the women distressed.
Sergeant Steve Carroll of the Community Safety Department said: “We are urging people to stay vigilant and ensure that bags and purses are kept safe while they are out and about.
"We are nearing a busy time where many people will be thinking about starting their Christmas shopping and therefore it is important that shoppers across North Wales remain alert to the issue.
“North Wales is a safe place however unfortunately there are some thieves who will seek to take advantage of any opportunity that they see – that could include taking a purse out of an open handbag or taking a wallet from an open coat pocket.
"Our inquiries into the incidents reported to us over the weekend are continuing and we urge people that if they see anyone acting suspiciously to please report it to us immediately and to any security staff that are on-duty in the store.”
He urged people to keep purses in zipped bags, never to leave them in trolleys or baskets, and to only take out money or bank cards needed for each shopping trip.
Sgt Carrol added: “One extremely effective item is purse bells. They don’t cost much, are easily fitted and once in place they will make a noise each time your purse is moved and therefore will alert you if ever an attempt is made to take or move your purse.”
Purse bells are available from a variety of locations including the Neighbourhood Watch Drop In Centre, Market street, Llandudno, where they can be obtained for a small donation.
Anyone with information or who may have witnessed the purse thefts is urged to contact officers on 101 . Alternatively, individuals with information can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
