A sex offender who carried out “an evil and determined campaign” of child abuse for nearly 40 years has been jailed for 18 years.
Peter Pendlebury, 71, who had a bail address at Ruthin, pleaded guilty to 18 charges of child sex offences at Caernarfon crown court today. The offences took place between 1977 and 2014 in Denbighshire.
Judge Philip Harris-Jenkins told him that, because he had admitted the offences, albeit it at a late stage, his sentence had been reduced from 20 years.
When he has completed half the sentence, he can apply for parole.
Pendlebury has to register as a sex offender, and a Sexual Harm Prevention Order was imposed which regulates any future contact with children.
The judge said his behaviour became worse over time, culminating in the rape of a child.
Following the sentencing, DC Katie Ellis of North Wales Police's Protecting Vulnerable People Unit in St Asaph said: "I’d like to commend all the victims in this case who showed great courage in standing up to the perpetrator and displayed significant strength of character throughout the police investigation.
"The significant sentence reflects the gravity of the offences committed and should serve as a warning that serious offences will result in lengthy prison sentences.
"It is important to reassure victims that North Wales Police will provide the appropriate specialist support to assist them throughout every stage of the investigation.
"North Wales Police takes matters of this nature very seriously."
