Victim was bound and gagged with parcel tape before Mullen carried out attack while high on drink and drugs

A rapist who put a sock in his victim’s mouth and bound and gagged her has been jailed for 11 years.
Lee James Mullen, 28, said to have taken drink and drugs before the attack, stuffed the sock in her mouth and wrapped parcel tape around her mouth and head.
When she desperately tried to rip the tape off, he taped around her wrists as well.
After dragging her into a bedroom, he sexually abused her and taunted her before raping her as she begged him to stop – asking her if she was enjoying it.
He denied rape and sexual assault but was convicted by a jury of nine women and three men at Mold Crown Court.
After the verdict, the victim bravely went into the witness box and described the effect of the attack upon her – and said in front of Mullen that she would not let him ruin her life.
Judge Niclas Parry told Mullen, of no fixed abode but who comes from Deeside, that he would have to register with the police as a sex offender for life.
He also made a life-time restraining order not to contact, follow or approach the victim in any way.
Judge Parry said that it was a sustained attack upon a female after gagging her by putting a sock in her mouth.
Out of control of his senses through alcohol and cocaine, the judge said Mullen made every effort to conceal evidence – he forced her to strip and put her clothes and the bed clothes in the washing machine.
Before leaving he threatened her not to call the police – and said if he went to prison then on his release he would “bring Hell to her.”
Then while in prison he had written letters trying to persuade the victim not to give evidence.
Mullen received concurrent sentences of 11 years and eight years for the rape and sexual assault, with concurrent 16 month and six month sentences for a physical assault upon her and perverting the course of justice, which he admitted.
In a moving victim impact statement which she read herself, the victim described the effects of “the horrendous” attack upon her which had left her with nightmares and on sleeping tablets.
She revealed that she now had a phobia about parcel tape - the sound, smell and even the touch of parcel tape affected her.
The attack had affected her confidence, she had flashbacks, it had affected her whole life, and she had to move away.
She said that Mullen knew what he had done to her but “had the cheek to drag me through a trial.
