Two friends who drowned in a bitterly cold Snowdonia waterfall pool had taken drugs and were unaware of the danger they were in, a coroner said today.
Coroners court heard Steffan Vernon of Caernarfon and Alexander Hadley of Dinorwic, who took cocaine and ecstasy, died after a dawn swim
Conclusions of accidental death were recorded on Steffan Vernon, 33, a masseuse, of Church Street, Caernarfon, and Alexander Hadley, of Dinorwic, aged 21, a landscape gardener.
They died after a dawn swim in a pool at the bottom of an 80ft waterfall at Llanberis.
Pathologist Dr Mark Lord at Caernarfon said Mr Vernon had alcohol below the drink-drive limit in his body but had taken ecstasy. Mr Hadley had a high level of alcohol and had taken cocaine at some time.
Dr Lord said: "I am told one of the effects of taking cocaine and ecstasy is a sense of bravado. There must have been some degree of intoxication at the time."
Senior North West Wales coroner Dewi Pritchard-Jones asked: "The levels of alcohol and other substances would have made these two men less able to deal with an emergency situation?" The pathologist replied: "Absolutely, yes."
