Chief constable Jeff Farr described the assaults as "completely unacceptable"

A CHIEF constable is appealing for greater support from the public after three of his officers were assaulted over the weekend.
The officers were responding to two unrelated calls - one in the Newbridge area and one in Monmouth - when they were attacked in the course of their duties. Two of the officers received physical injuries in the unrelated incident, while the third was vomited over.
The chief constable of Gwent Police, Jeff Farrar, has condemned the behaviour and called on members of the public to support his officers as they go about their work.
He added that many of his staff report an "unjustified barrage of criticism" from the public as they to do their jobs.
In the first incident, a 28-year-old man kicked a Gwent officer in the ribs after police had been called to a house in Torlais Street, Newbridge, on Saturday night. The officer had to be taken to hospital following the incident, and his attacker was given a caution for assaulting a constable in the execution of his duty.
The second attack happened after police were called to a disturbance at a pub in Monmouth on Sunday night - while dealing with the incident one officer was pushed to the floor and hit his head, and another officer was vomited on. A 22 year old man from Monmouth has been cautioned for being drunk and disorderly in a public place. The officer who was pushed to the floor had to be taken to hospital.

Both injured officers have since been discharged.
Chief constable Farrar said; "It was a busy weekend across the force, especially with many enjoying the big weekend of sport, however, please spare a thought for those who were policing the streets during the drunken aftermath. It's one thing to drown your sorrows, but when that turns into assaulting police officers, or in another case vomiting on an officer, this is completely unacceptable.
"Two officers had to be taken to hospital, and whilst they appear to be okay and those responsible were dealt with, this shouldn't be tolerated.

"Police officers have a difficult enough job and many of my staff comment on the unjustified barrage of criticism they feel they face when they are just trying to do their jobs.
"We should not forget that the police are rightly expected to step forward to protect the public when others step back, but police officers are human beings like everyone else and they shouldn't have to expect this.
"I know we enjoy the support of the vast majority of the people in Gwent, and I think they would agree that this behaviour is unacceptable."
