A student is behind bars after being found guilty of raping a “fresher” hours after she arrived for her first day at university.
Akeem Hassain, 20, of Oak Road, Merthyr Tydfil claimed sex had been fully consensual
Akeem Hassain, 20, of Oak Road, Merthyr Tydfil claimed sex between them, in September 2014, had been fully consensual.
But his fellow student, also 20, who cannot be identified, told a jury at Cardiff Crown Court that she had been so drunk she had to be helped back to her room .
She woke to find someone was having sex with her, prosecuting counsel Michael Jones told a jury.
Under cross examination, defence barrister John Ryan suggested she had started kissing Hassain and had pulled him onto the bed with her.
She said: “That doesn’t sound like me at all. It’s not something I would do.”
The trial, which began last week, heard how the students were getting to know each other before drinking started in the early evening.
Another female told the court that what happened next was all a “bit of a blur”.
The next day she went to the complainant’s room to “fill me in” about their night.
But she found her crying, saying a man had had sex with her even though she told him to stop - and she didn’t know who it was.
But as she (the witness) spoke to a male student later and the woman’s name was mentioned, another student came over, saying: “She was the one Akeem sh***** last night”.
When he was told he was being arrested, Hassain said: “ That can’t be right - I’m doing police sciences. ”
It was suggested the woman claimed she had been raped to “save her reputation” because she was embarrassed at having had a “one night stand”.
But Mr Jones told the jurors: “He took advantage of a woman in a vulnerable state.
“She was not consenting and he did not reasonably think she was.
“The fact a woman is intoxicated gives no one the right to take advantage but it may give them the opportunity.”
Two women at the back of the courtroom were in tears as the guilty verdict was announced by the jury foreman.
