A MAN with a history of alcohol and drug problems died after collapsing in his room, an inquest was told.
William Paul Williams, 42, of Galahad Court, Hightown, was pronounced dead at Wrexham Maelor Hospital on April 19.
In a statement read by North Wales East and Central coroner John Gittins at a hearing in Wrexham yesterday Mr Williams’ brother Scott said their mother Gwyneth found him on the floor.
She ran to fetch a neighbour who called an ambulance.
The inquest heard Mrs Williams told police her son had shouted for her and she saw him collapsed on the floor of his room.
She said in the days before his death Mr Williams had suffered from breathlessness and had difficulty walking.
Dr Fiona Rae said paramedics tried to resuscitate Mr Williams at his home, with no success. There were no signs of life on his arrival at Wrexham Maelor Hospital and he was pronounced dead at 7.45pm.
Angela Evans, Mr Williams’ key worker for the last three years, said in a statement he was on a methadone script for heroin dependency. He had periods of heavy drinking but also periods of abstinence.
Mr Williams’ health had deteriorated in the month before his death and he was drinking a bottle of sherry or vodka a day.
Ms Evans said she called an ambulance during a home visit to Mr Williams on April 14.
A specialist urged him to go to Accident and Emergency but he refused.
Pathologist Dr Andrew Dalton recorded the cause of death as symptoms including multi organ failure, cirrhosis of the liver and chronic pancreatitis.
Mr Gittins recorded a conclusion of a drug and alcohol-related death.
