North Wales,UK - North Wales among highest rates of drunk and disorderly convictions

North Wales has one of the highest rates of conviction for drunk and disorderly in England and Wales

Between April and December 2014, 20 people per 100,000 were convicted for being drunk and disorderly with aggravations

North Wales has one of the highest rates of conviction for drunk and disorderly in England and Wales, according to official statistics.
The figures - obtained via a Freedom of Information request to the Ministry of Justice - show there were 20 convictions per 100,000 people in North Wales between April and December 2014.
However, if the figures are indicative of the number for the entire year, then it would show a decrease from the previous year’s total.
It seems the downward trend was nationwide, as the combined England and Wales total for the same period stands at 9,745.
If rates continued at the same pace, 13,000 people would have been convicted in England and Wales, which would have been a drop from the 14,718 in the previous year.
Clive Wolfendale, chief executive of addiction charity CAIS and a former deputy chief constable for North Wales Police, believes high-pressure lifestyles and strong policing contribute to the figures.
“People drink to escape what they perceive to be the grind and boredom of everyday life,” he said.
“Hazardous drinking behaviour is best addressed through inspiring in people the vision of a more fulfilled, caring and active lifestyle.
“That is the mission of organisations such as CAIS.
“Figures for offences of drunk and disorderly can be misleading. They are often a reflection of the determination of the police to deal with disorder on the streets.
“The more drunken troublemakers are confronted and arrested, the more recorded offences will rise.”
