Chocolatier Mark Young has taken matters into his own hands after getting fed up with what he calls an 'ineffective' police response

A shop owner has started his own night-time patrols of his town’s streets following a spate of burglaries and what he calls an “ineffective” police response.
Mark Young , a Denbigh town councillor and owner of Denbigh Chocolate Shop, says windows at 12 businesses in the town have been broken by burglars since Thursday evening.
He says a lack of leadership by North Wales Police and Crime Commissioner Winston Roddick has forced him to become a crime-fighting chocolatier and take to the streets by night.
Cllr Young challenged Mr Roddick to make good the damage to the town’s businesses, as he says the Commissioner has left the town vulnerable to crime.
He said: “When are they going to get more police on the beat?
“ North Wales Police have got £40m in their current account in reserve.
“The police have lost control in Denbigh .
“If we had as many police officers as traffic wardens on the streets across Denbigh , we wouldn’t have these problems.
“I would like to know how many officers are covering Denbigh because the criminals’ confidence is sky high.
“It’s not the bobbies on the beat - overall they do a great job.
“It’s the leadership that needs to shift its horses and get some cover.
“Even if we have a police car parked and a couple of officers walking around, it would help. It’s that bad.”
Cllr Young says the cost of increased insurance after a claim means local businesses are better off paying for the damage themselves than claiming on their policies.
He said: “It’s a lot for a small business. Businesses are boarded up and it looks bad.”
Cllr Young says one businesswoman has even been sleeping in her shop because she is worried about her windows being broken.
He decided to take matters into his own hands on Sunday evening.
