BANGOR residents who are tormented by boy racers have triggered a city-wide crackdown on anti-social drivers.
People living on Caernarfon Road put up with drivers revving their engines, sounding horns, playing loud music and racing up and down the road until the early hours on a daily basis.
North Wales Police have launched a huge clamp down on anti-social drivers throughout the city in response to a torrent of recent complaints from residents, who say they are losing sleep and fear for their safety.
Resident Steven Evans, who has had cans of beer thrown at him from car windows outside his home, said: “We don’t get five minutes of quiet, it’s a nightmare.
“We’re just banging our heads against the wall.
“It’s not a good place to live at the moment.”
Mr Evans said the noise and disturbance starts at about 7pm and does not end until 2am.
Eirian Roberts, chair of Coed Mawr Glanadda Community Group, has lived on Caernarfon Road for more than 10 years.
She said: “They have cruises which often involve side by side racing, handbrake turns, doughnuts, time trials and high noise levels.
“They tend to use the retail park car parks on which to congregate.
“It is a public nuisance and very anti-social.”
Police have identified car parks and streets off Caernarfon Road, the Plas Llwyd car park, behind the old Boots store and Maesgeirchen as hotspots which will be targetted as part of Operation Monk.
Sgt Andrew McGregor said: “Over recent months we have received many complaints ranging from drivers revving their engines, driving at high speed and generally acting in an anti-social manner behind the wheel by doing handbrake turns and wheel spins.
“Clearly this is having an effect on local residents, however people can be reassured that we are on the look-out for anybody driving dangerously.
“Those found to be breaking the law face having their vehicles seized from them and face prosecution.”
Elin Walker-Jones, Gwynedd councillor for the Glyder Ward, said: “I know members of the community will be very pleased action is being take.
“I look forward to seeing how successful the operation is in the long term.”
