A pensioner was spat at and pushed to the ground by a “dangerous” man in combat gear – after she got tangled in the leads of his Staffordshire bull terrier dogs.
Carol Bebb, 61, was “sent spinning” by a single shove from 17st Nigel Williams as she went out shopping, Cardiff Crown Court heard.
A witness saw her head “bounce” off a low wall which she hit as she fell during the morning attack in Porth, said prosecutor Ieuan Morris.
Hothead
She needed six stitches in the wound she suffered and was left shocked, traumatised and in fear of ever meeting up with him in the Rhondda Valley village again.
At his trial Williams, 57, who has a string of previous convictions involving violence but denied wounding Mrs Bebb, was described as a “hothead”.
Jailing him for two years on Thursday, Judge Daniel Williams said: “In my view you are dangerous”.
“She is just over 5ft tall and at 9.30am was on her way to Costcutters when you, all 17st of you, in a combat jacket and combat baseball cap with your three bull terriers were going in the same direction.
“She felt intimidated by the dogs, which for you is, no doubt, part of the pleasure of owning them and when her leg became entangled, your reaction was a torrent of vile abuse.
“You called her a ‘f****** b****’, a ‘slag’ and a ‘slut’ and spat in her face.
“As you walked off, you told her to ‘f*** off’ and when she said ‘Yes, and you’, that remark, from this small lady, was too much for your fragile ego to stand.
“You walked back and with considerable force, pushed her.
“Then you turned on your heel, no doubt thinking a score had been settled, and you walked off while she was left upset, wounded and with a real and long-lasting sense of insecurity.”
Knifed in the face
He said Williams, of Heath Terrace, Ynyshir, went on to lie his way through police interviews and through his trial where he also “got a witness to perjure herself” for him – but a jury found him guilty.
In mitigation, it was said he had only “pushed” not “punched” Mrs Bebb, and had not followed up his attack to humiliate her any further.
He was also said to have missed a knee operation he has been waiting for and to have lost a supervisory job in a call centre which he had been to start, as a result of the case.
And it was suggested he was a little old to be still acting in the way he does.
His previous convictions, said the judge, included “knifing somebody in the face; kicking a man; causing harm in a road rage incident; assaulting a female and, as recently as 2012, punching a woman who (also) banged her head as she fell”.
“You are a walking confrontation, bristling in defiance, anger and arrogance”, he told him.
