A MAN bought a recovery truck and wore a high-visibility jacket to steal a £3,000 Mini from a shopping centre car park in broad daylight.
The Mini was parked at Broughton Shopping Park, Flintshire.
Nine days later a BT Peugeot Boxer van, parked outside a Crewe hotel and with equipment worth £3,500 inside, was also towed away by Joseph Jones, using the truck he had bought three weeks earlier.
Jones, 22, of Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, was jailed for two-and-a-half years at Caernarfon crown court after being convicted of the thefts, which were caught on CCTV, and for a string of other offences.
Frances Willmott, prosecuting, said the Mini car was found later in a car park at Ewloe with stolen number plates.
The BT van had been seen by an off-duty police officer as it was towed towards Wrexham.
Miss Willmott said mobile phone information placed Jones in the area.
Days later the recovery vehicle was discovered on Wrexham Industrial Estate. A ‘hi-vis’ vest and a glove were also recovered.
Jones’ DNA was found on the glove.
Jones had also been found guilty of stealing caravans from Cefn Mawr and Corwen.
He had, in addition, used fraudulently a Scottish Power fuel card, which vanished from a van, at Wrexham, Chester, Liverpool and Mold, spending £674. He was at the time a disqualified driver.
Among the charges were three breaches of a non-molestation order, issued at Wrexham county court, which he admitted. He had sent a Facebook ‘friend’ request to his ex-partner, Miss Willmott added.
Defence counsel Anna Pope said Jones’s sister had died and his depression worsened considerably.
The Recorder Peter Rouch, QC, told Jones it was a “catalogue of offending” which continued even when he was on police bail.
