Dean Peter Rutter, 41, of Frog Lane, Abenbury near Wrexham, said he wasn’t bothered by what he had done and would continue if he was able
A man jailed for 19 years for the “monstrous” sexual abuse of young boys said he wasn’t bothered by what he had done and would continue if he was able to.
Dean Peter Rutter, 41, who was sentenced at Mold Crown Court today, admitted 20 offences against four victims over a period of about eight years.
He was warned by Judge Niclas Parry that he would not be automatically released at the half-way point of his sentence, and would only be released if the parole board considered it safe to do so.
Rutter, of Frog Lane, Abenbury near Wrexham , who faked a suicide when police started investigating his activity, showed no emotion when the sentence was passed.
The court heard he had repeatedly raped one boy from the age of six or seven until he was aged 13, while another victim had been raped from the age of 10 to 16.
A third victim had been sexually abused about 20 times from the age of seven, and the judge said a fourth victim was targeted from the age of nine or 10.
Judge Parry said the victims had been groomed with gifts and money, and had been threatened not to reveal what was happening to them.
Each victim was frightened of the physical violence he had threatened and which they had seen him use.
Rutter, who had a previous conviction for indecently assaulting a man in the 1990s, was told that the impact on his victims was “frankly unimaginable”.
“Their happiness has been affected,” said Judge Parry.
One had turned to self-harming and another said his life had been destroyed.
But the judge said the court was also “amazed” at the fortitude of some young boys who had said that, despite everything, they would get on with their lives.
Rutter said he just did it because he was attracted to young boys and would continue to abuse boys as far as he was able.
He was ordered to register as a sex offender for life, and a life-time sexual harm prevention order was made, under which he is not to have any unsupervised contact with boys under 16.
The defendant admitted 20 charges of sexual assault, rape, attempted rape and causing a child to engage in sexual activity.
Prosecuting barrister Mark Connor said one victim had tried to kill himself, while another said he was angry at what had happened but felt relief that it had come to an end and he was safe.
Henry Hills, defending, told the court: “It beholds me to acknowledge the extremely grave nature of the offences and the harm that has been caused.”
The only real mitigation was the fact that Rutter had taken full responsibility and pleaded guilty to all charges, he said.
After his arrest, Rutter had been due to return to Wrexham police station as a result of the ongoing investigation, but left a suicide note and tablets on a table at his home.
The note said he had taken an overdose and gone to hang himself from a tree, and a considerable amount of police time was wasted before he was found in a Tenby hotel 10 days later.
Rutter previously admitted wasting police time and received a three-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, with £85 costs and an £80 surcharge.
Following the sentencing, Detective Inspector Sarah-Jayne Williams said: “This sentence is testament to the courage and strength shown by the young victims who have come forward and made reports to North Wales Police.
“I welcome the significant sentence which reflects the gravity of Dean Rutter’s offences and will ensure that he cannot pose a risk to other young people.”
An NSPCC Cymru / Wales spokesman said: “Rutter’s horrific crimes will have caused unimaginable damage to his young victims.
“It is right that he has been jailed for a significant period so others will be protected from a dangerous and predatory paedophile.
“It is also important that this case sends a message to victims that justice can be achieved when they come forward to report what has happened to them.
“Every victim of sexual abuse should be given the support they need to overcome their trauma and help rebuild their lives.”
