Alan Morris, 33, Garden City who was jailed for 20 months today at Mold Crown Court for wounding his 18-year-old girlfriend Alice Mierkalne.
Alan Morris, 33, of Garden City admitted wounding his 18-year-old girlfriend Alice Mierkalne
A man who laughed as he attacked his girlfriend has been jailed for 20 months.
Judge Niclas Parry told Alan Morris, 33, that it was the third incident of violence which involved a partner.
At the time of the attack on the 18-year-old girl Morris was already serving a 12-month suspended prison sentence.
Morris pleaded guilty to wounding.
Judge Parry sitting at Mold Crown Court today said: “The reality is that you are a man who beats up women.”
The defendant’s girlfriend Alice Mierkalne, a Latvian national, read a victim impact statement to the court in which she took much of the blame herself.
Judge Parry told Morris: “Whatever your victim now says, the reality is that when she tried to escape, you grabbed her and punched her to the back of the head.
“When she was begging you to stop you laughed and carried out what was a sustained attack which caused nasty injuries.”
She was kept in hospital overnight, had a gash to the back of the head which required stitching and bruising all over her body.
Morris of Bridge View in Garden City, was jailed for 14 months – with six months to run consecutively for breaching his suspended sentence.
Before sentence was passed Simon Mintz, prosecuting, said the couple had been living together in Garden City.
On August Bank Holiday Monday they had been out with others and his brother had questioned her about bruising to her face.
The defendant became angry and accused her of trying to get people to batter him.
That continued at home where a sustained assault took place.
She tried to get out of the front door but he pulled her back, pulled her hair and punched her to the back of the head twice.
He punched her to the head and face and when she covered her head with her hands he allegedly laughed and said “Do you really think that is going to protect you?”
Morris said he would kill her as the attack continued, she escaped into a nearby garden where she was found by some friends.
She suffered a three inch cut to the back of the head which needed stitching in hospital, cuts, abrasions and swellings.
When arrested Morris denied the attack.
The court heard today Ms Mierkalne worked as a carer and also attended college but the attack had affected her studies and her employment and she had become depressed, anxious and nervous.
She Wants Relationship To Continue
In a second victim impact statement she read to the court she said she wanted the relationship to continue.
She now claimed he had never laid a hand on her before and said the incident occurred because she had told untruths.
Ms Mierkalne suggested something may have been put in her drink to make her act in such a way.
They had a strong relationship for two years, lived together for eight months, she visited him in prison and she did not want a restraining order, she said.
She said the incident had not had an effect on her physically and mentally.
When questioned by the judge, she said that she had not come under any pressure to make a new statement.
Neil Gunn, defending, said that there was clearly confusion about what had occurred that night and she believed she may have been given something which affected her perception and memory.
Both had been drinking, she ended up with injuries but all the details may be something of a mystery, he said.
