Michael Pearce claimed he heard voices, but psychiatrists disagreed

A SKETTY pensioner cowered inside her locked bathroom as a neighbour armed with knives repeatedly stabbed at the front door of the property, shouting threats to kill her.
Michael Pearce, of Corrymore Mansions on Sketty Road, had gone to the home of his 70-year-old neighbour in March, claiming he had heard voices in his head, demanding he carry out his threats. He also carved out biblical symbols on the door, as his terrified female victim, who lived alone, fled into the bathroom for safety, where she called the police.
But psychiatric reports carried out on him following his arrest concluded that the 57-year-old was not suffering from any serious mental illness.
John Lloyd, prosecuting, told Swansea Crown Court: "His victim lived alone directly opposite him, and knew him as a neighbour. On the night she was home alone and he came to the front door and starting banging it loudly and kicking it, repeatedly stabbing it with a knife. He was making threats to kill.
"He said: 'It is Mike, I have got a knife and I am going to kill you'. He carved a symbol on the door, a star of David. His victim said he was very angry, but was talking very precisely, which made it even worse. She said she thought she was going to pass out with fear, and locked herself in her bathroom. She called police and remained inside."
He added: "She said she had not cried when she was diagnosed with cancer, but since this incident she has cried almost continuously."
The court was told that Pearce also called police, and told officers when they arrived: 'I would have killed her if you had not removed me'.
Pearce pleaded guilty to making threats to kill, and criminal damage.
Mitigating, Stuart John said: "It seems that he is not ill but enjoys being the centre of attention with psychiatric professionals.
