Swansea,South Wales - Jail for mum who throttled daughter after rejection

Swansea Crown Court heard how the mum grabbed her daughter by the neck and squeezed until the child threw up
A MUM who throttled her young daughter until she vomited after the youngster said she didn't want to live with her has been sent to jail.
Swansea Crown Court heard the mother had a drunken "moment of madness" in the child's bedroom, grabbing the girl by the throat and squeezing so hard she threw up on the bed.
When the child was examined two days later in hospital she was found to have blood-shot eyes, petechiae marks all over her face from bleeding into the skin, and red marks on her neck from her attacker's hands.
Georgina Buckley, prosecuting, said the mum — who cannot be named to protect the identity of the child — had had little contact with the girl in recent years, with the daughter living with the family of her estranged partner.
However, on the day in question she had gone to see the child, and had later gone shopping and eaten a meal at TGI Friday's in Swansea city centre.
The woman then went back to the house where her daughter lived where she consumed "a considerable amount of alcohol". In the early hours of the morning she went to the child's bedroom, woke her up and asked if she wanted to live with her instead — when the child said she wanted to stay where she was, the mother grabbed her by the throat and squeezed.
The mother left the house the following day, and child initially told people the "rash" on her face was caused by her playing with make-up, before revealing the true cause.
A medical examination of the girl concluded that the injuries were "consistent with attempted strangulation".
The woman — who is in her 30s — had previously pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm when she appeared in the dock for sentencing.
The court heard the defendant had no previous convictions, but was given a police caution for actual bodily harm in 2005 when she attacked her mum with an eight-inch kitchen knife.
Nicola Powell, for the defendant, described the incident as a "moment of madness", and said that save for the earlier caution, she was a woman of clean character.
Judge Peter Heywood said the woman owed her daughter care and love — but had shown her neither on the night in question.
He added: "Our children are the most precious thing in the world."
The judge said he had considered a pre-sentence report from the probation service which recommended a suspended sentence — but he said he would be failing in his public duty if he did anything other than impose an immediate custodial sentence.
The woman was sentenced to 16 months in prison, half of which she will spend in custody.
