Llanberis man in police custody following the death of an elderly man locals have named as Dafydd Hughes
A man has been arrested after a 70-year-old man was taken to hospital in Llanberis .
Police were called to a property in Maes Padarn at around 3am this morning after they were contacted by colleagues in the Welsh Ambulance Service.
The elderly man was taken to hospital where he later died.
Locals have named the dead man as Dafydd Hughes. Police have yet to confirm the identify of the dead man.
North Wales Police arrested a local man who is currently being quizzed by detectives.
Police are refusing to say on what charge the man has been arrested.
The death is being treated as suspicious and police say they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the death.
A postmortem examination is due to take place later today.
Officers are in the process of trying to contact the dead man's relatives.
Margaret Morris, 50, who lives next door to the house where Mr Hughes lived, said she had known him for 18 years and was shocked by the death.
She said: "It was such a shock - especially on New Year's Day. You hear about these things happening but you never think it will happen in your own neighbourhood.
"Dafydd was a lovely, lovely man. The whole family is. He loved to garden and was always out there digging around. He used to share his tomatoes and onions with neighbours if he'd grown a lot.
"There's been a lot of police activity around the place.
"I can't believe it's happened. He was such a nice man."
