Alan Fothergill went from being a high-flying dietician to a heroin user, Llandudno magistrates court heard

A Colwyn Bay man who went from being a high-flying dietician for top football clubs to a heroin addict has been sentenced for shoplifting.
Alan Fothergill’s world crashed after he injured a cruciate ligament and became addicted to prescribed pain-killing drugs, Llandudno court heard.
When they were stopped, he turned to illegal drugs, said Nia Dawson, who was defending him on two joint shoplifting charges.
Fothergill had a master’s degree and at one time was a dietician for Leeds and Sheffield United football clubs, taught science in secondary school and was on the crest of a wave, she said.
“He’s desperate to get back to the man he was,” said Ms Dawson.
“It’s a long time since I’ve seen anyone so motivated to work and get help.”
A probation officer told the court that Fothergill had been open about his misuse of heroin.
He and Howard Widdowson, 48, both of Abergele Road, Colwyn Bay, admitted stealing meat and washing powder.
They were placed on nine-month community orders, which include 20 days of rehabilitation activity and drug rehabilitation orders.
They must pay £276 each in a fine, compensation and costs.
Widdowson, who also has a heroin habit, vowed as he left court: “With God’s help I will conquer this.”
