Cardiff,South Wales - A father and son who swindled vulnerable and elderly victims out of more than £70,000 have been jailed

Dad-of-six Jeffery Tawse and his son James have both been jailed
Dad-of-six Jeffery Tawse and his son James have both been jailed

Jeffery and James Tawse pretended to fix drives and became abusive when customers refused to pay

A father and son duo who swindled vulnerable and elderly victims out of £71,520 in a “cold-hearted” building con have been jailed.
Dad-of-six Jeffery Tawse, 52, and his son James, 25, carried out shoddy driveway repairs for elderly customers before demanding money from them.
In some cases they marched their victims to the nearest cash machine to withdraw the money and became aggressive and abusive if they dared to refuse.
The most severe instance was when they fleeced £64,500 from a vulnerable man who had suffered memory loss due to a cycling accident.
Cardiff Crown Court heard the pair, from Rumney , Cardiff , operated under various business names including South West Power Washing and Premier Drives.
They cold-called their victims and told them they could repair their drives for a fee.
Prosecutor Lee Reynolds said they used “aggressive sales techniques and intimidation” and the work, if done at all, was “done to a poor standard”.
A driveway the pair charged thousands of pounds for and treated with saltwater instead of special sealant – but the weeds grew straight back

Gave fake details

The rogue builders often charged extra for a special weed-proof sealant to keep the drive shiny – but when tested the mixture turned out to be salt water, which has no effect whatsoever.
Sometimes they even damaged the customers’ property by filling sand between paving slabs, which caused the bricks to crack when it rained.
If the customers or their families tried to call the pair up to complain they were directed to a fake number.
In the unlikely event they did get through they received a torrent of abuse, the court heard.
A 71-year-old man referred to as “Mr P” was conned out of £64,500 when the Tawses pretended to do some work for him.
Work on this wall in Aberdare should have cost £600 but the victim paid more than £64,000

Mr P suffered from serious cognitive difficulties after a cycling accident and was paid a large sum of money in compensation, the court heard.
His bank called police after they noticed unusual activity on his account and a search of his home found notes referring to the work – but Mr P cannot remember any of it.
Mr Reynolds said all that could be found was “a small wall which appeared to have been built”.
He added: “The workmanship was truly appalling and it had to be demolished.”

In another case Tawse Snr worked on an 83-year-old woman’s roof without her knowledge and demanded £600 payment when she returned home.
She said she was scared to refuse him the money in case he became violent but was left feeling angry and foolish, the court heard.

'Cold-blooded, heartless, and even pitiless'

Judge David Wynn Morgan said: “You targeted the elderly and the vulnerable. At least one of your victims had short-term memory issues or was disabled.
“There was evidence that you were rude to your victims when they had the temerity to complain and they were subjected to your foul temper.
“You identified and preyed upon vulnerable people in a cold-blooded, heartless, and even pitiless way.
“There is something insensate and even inhuman about the way that you operated.”

Both men admitted a single charge of conspiracy to defraud while Tawse Snr also pleaded guilty to a charge of money laundering.
In respect of that charge the court heard how at one stage Tawse Snr hid £48,500 in his eight-year-old grandson’s bank account.
Tawse Jnr was jailed for two years and ordered to pay a £140 victim surcharge while his father was jailed for four years for the fraud charge and two years for the money laundering charge, with the terms to run consecutively.
He must also pay a £170 victim surcharge.

Pontypool,South Wales - This darts player left a bouncer with a double fracture to his jaw when the doorman asked him to leave a pub

Joshua Bryant was handed a suspended jail term at Cardiff Crown Court

Joshua Bryant punched door supervisor James Griffiths while his back was turned in a 'cowardly' assault

A darts player left a bouncer needing surgery after “lashing out” when he was asked to leave a pub after upsetting two women.
Joshua Bryant, 20, left door supervisor James Griffiths with two fractures to his jaw after punching him in the head while his back was turned at The George pub in Pontypool .
Sentencing at Cardiff Crown Court on Thursday, Judge Eleri Rees described the assault as “cowardly”.
The court heard the incident occurred around 1.30am on Sunday, May 8, at the pub in Commercial Street.
Prosecutor Gareth James said the pub was busy as there had been a karaoke night on and a DJ playing.
The court heard the door supervisor was approached by two women who complained about the defendant’s behaviour.
Mr Griffiths spoke to Bryant but had to ask him to leave when his behaviour did not improve.
The incident happened at The George in Pontypool

Drink 'spiked' claim

The prosecutor said: “Mr Griffiths had his back to the defendant who struck a heavy blow to the side of his face, causing a double fracture to his jaw.”
Mr James said the victim immediately knew something was wrong, as his teeth felt misaligned, and he went to hospital.
The court heard he had to have two operations under general anaesthetic to have a metal plate inserted and has not yet been discharged.
Bryant told police officers he had been out with his father and they had been to two pubs before drinking in The George.
He said he had used the karaoke machine but started to feel strange and thought his drink might have been spiked, claiming he could not remember the incident.
The defendant accepted he must have been responsible because his right hand was swollen and apologised, telling officers he was “not that sort of person”.

Happened 'in a flash'

In a victim impact statement Mr Griffiths, a leisure attendant for Caerphilly council , said he still suffers from numbness in his mouth and his confidence has been affected.
The court heard Bryant had no previous convictions but five cautions for offences including assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
Susan Ferrier, defending, said her client was a talented darts player who is hoping to find an apprenticeship as a builder.
She said: “He accepts his behaviour was wrong and he should not have reacted in the way he did.
“What he did not do when he lashed out was think of the consequences – it was all over in a flash.”
Bryant was sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court

Punched 'with great force'

Ms Ferrier accepted Bryant was “immature” but said he had taken steps to improve his behaviour, such as giving up alcohol.
She added: “He is clearly someone who has been capable of going off the rails and needs pushing back in the right direction.
“A custodial sentence might push him in the wrong direction.”
Bryant, from School Crescent in Pontypool, pleaded guilty on September 8 to causing grievous bodily harm.
Judge Rees said: “Mr Griffiths turned his back and in a cowardly fashion you punched him with great force to the jaw.”
She said aggravating factors included the fact the victim was in a vulnerable occupation and that the assault happened in a public place.
Bryant was sentenced to 12 months in prison, suspended for a year, and ordered to carry out 250 hours of unpaid work plus 20 days of a rehabilitation activity.
He was ordered to pay £1,000 in compensation plus a £100 victim surcharge and £250 in costs.

Powys,South Wales - Obsessive stalker behind 'emotional rape' campaign against author's daughter has jail term upheld

A photographer has been jailed at Merthyr Crown Court for a seven-year stalking campaign against a best-selling American autho rand her daughter.

Mark Jury became fixated on Kenna Carlson and her mum Kristine after meeting the author on a transatlantic flight

A delusional stalker who waged an online campaign of “emotional rape” against the teenage daughter of an American author has had his appeal against sentence rejected by top judges.
Mark Jury, 41, of Crickhowell , in Powys , became fixated on Kenna Carlson and her mum Kristine after meeting the author on a transatlantic flight in 2007.
He initially targeted the mum in a relentless stalking campaign before turning to her terrified daughter, who he claimed a psychic told him would be his future wife.
The campaign resulted in court hearings in the US and UK, warnings from the police, and involvement of the FBI.
But it was only when Jury was arrested in February 2014 that the campaign stopped.
He pleaded guilty last October to two counts of stalking and was jailed for four and a half years at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court .
On Thursday his lawyers went to the Court of Appeal in London in a bid for a cut in the sentence but instead were told by senior judges that Jury deserved what he got.
“It seems to us that he had, over a considerable period of time, made the lives of his two victims very unpleasant,” said Mrs Justice Elisabeth Laing.
“He had engaged in a relentless and nasty campaign against both of them.
Kristine Carlson & her daughter Kenna.

'Exceptionally serious'

“He had been for many years a constant, vicious, and haunting presence in their internet worlds.
“Warnings and agreements had not deterred or prevented that conduct until he was arrested and put on bail.
“This was an exceptionally serious offence of this kind and the sentence was neither wrong in principle nor manifestly excessive.”
The court heard Mrs Carlson was a recent widow when she had the misfortune of being placed next to Jury on a flight from the US in November 2007.
They talked about her work and she gave him a copy of her book but was surprised when he got in touch with her via social media the following month.
In a chilling prediction of what was to come he quipped: “They must have developed Twitter for stalkers.”
His relentless campaign of online communication then began with criticism of her abilities as a writer and mother.
He created false online identities to slander her and made sick remarks about his intentions towards her daughter.
When Kenna turned 18 in 2010 his campaign against her stepped up to a new level.
He said he loved her, sent her flowers, and criticised her mum for not letting them be together.

'Prolonged, determined, and frightening'

During 2011 he travelled to the US – causing mum and daughter to leave their home for fear of him turning up.
They used a private investigator to watch him and make sure he left the country.
Court proceedings in the US and UK did not stop him and, despite a warning from Dyfed-Powys Police , he continued.
Some of the messages which were sent came through accounts which Jury had set up in the name of Kenna Carlson’s deceased father.
It was only his arrest which brought the campaign, which Kenna described as “emotional rape”, to an end.
After his arrest Jury was assessed by experts and said to have a delusional personality.
Anti-psychotic medication was recommended but he said he would rather go to prison.
Merthyr Law Courts

Sentencing last year Judge Richard Twomlow said Jury was a cyber-stalker who had made his victims’ lives into nightmares.
On Thursday his lawyers argued at the Court of Appeal that the four-and-a-half year sentence he received was too tough.
It did not take proper account of his mental condition, Lord Justice Treacy, Mrs Justice Laing and Mr Justice Irwin were told.
But, rejecting the appeal, Mrs Justice Laing said Jury was guilty of “prolonged, determined and frightening conduct”.
He may have had mental problems but he had shown in the months after his arrest and before he was jailed that he could control himself when he wanted to, she said.
The sentence was upheld.

Wales,UK- These are the Welsh killers serving whole life sentences

Mark Bridger, Peter Moore and John Cooper are all serving whole life sentences
Mark Bridger, Peter Moore and John Cooper are all serving whole life sentences

It's likely they will all die in prison

Some crimes are so horrific it's hard to imagine a punishment that fits.
But the men who committed some of the most shocking murders in Welsh history have been jailed for their entire lives.
Under British law, criminals who are given a whole-life tariffs instead of a life sentence are unlikely ever to be released as their offences are deemed too serious.
They cannot be released other than at the discretion of the justice secretary on compassionate grounds, for example if they are terminally ill or seriously incapacitated.
In 2015, the European court ruled that the UK can impose the sentences after they previously deemed them a breach of human rights.
Read on to see why these murderers have been handed the harshest of sentences.

Peter Moore

Peter Moore murdered four men for sexual gratification in 1995

Cinema owner Peter Moore was the “Man in Black” who butchered Henry Roberts, Edward Carthy, Keith Randles and Tony Davies to satisfy his perverted sexual urges.
He was dubbed the most dangerous man ever to set foot in Wales at his trial in 1996.
Moore maintained the facade of a respectable business owner by day, but was a deplorable murderer who collected Nazi memorabilia by night.
Traffic safety manager Randles, 49, was stabbed by Moore as he slept in his caravan at Mona, Anglesey, in November 1995.
Moore told Randles as he attacked him that he was doing it “for fun”.
Jailing him, Mr Justice Maurice Kay said: ””At no stage have you shown the slightest remorse or regret for the killings. Nor for the 20 years of terror and violence that preceded them. I consider you to be as dangerous a man as it is possible to find.
“I shall have to report to the Secretary of State, advising him of my view as to the earliest date that you should be considered for release.
“I don’t want you or anybody else to be in the slightest doubt as to what I shall say. In a word: Never.”
The family of one of his victims was repulsed when Moore tried to overturn his whole-life sentence using European law in 2013. Edward Carthy’s stepmother sister, Lynne Haygarth, said: “He’s not human anyway so he can’t get out. No court will give him parole. He’ll die in prison."

Mark Bridger

Mark Bridger, who was jailed for killing five-year-old April Jones
The murder of schoolgirl April Jones revolted the nation in 2012.
Her killer, Mark Bridger, will die behind bars for kidnapping and murdering the five-year-old after his appeal to the European court was quashed in 2014.
The father-of-six snatched April near her home in Machynlleth, Powys, and her body has never been found.
The cottage where the murder is believed to have occurred was demolished in November 2014 as April’s parents Paul and Coral Jones looked on.
April Jones

Bridger demanded a move from HMP Wakefield, in West Yorkshire, in the same year after he was slashed across the face with a blade by fellow murderer.
The move was refused – as were his demands for compensation.
He will spend the rest of his life in the prison, known as “Monster Mansion”, among the worst murderers, paedophiles and sexual predators in the country.
April’s mother Coral said at the time: “I hope he’s threatened every day for the rest of his life. Every day I’m suffering – I’ve got a lifetime of hell to live through.
“Him wanting to be moved is disgusting. He did the crime now he’s got to do the time.”

John Cooper

John Cooper (left) was found guilty of murdering Gwenda and Peter Dixon and Richard and Helen Thomas
John Cooper shot brother and sister Richard and Helen Thomas at their remote mansion near Milford Haven in 1985.
In 1989, married couple Gwenda and Peter Dixon were also shot at close range while strolling along the Pembrokeshire coastal path near Little Haven.
But for nearly three decades, their murders were left unsolved.
It wasn't until May 2011 that John Cooper was found guilty.
John Cooper
The shotgun-wielding farm labourer had stalked Pembrokeshire for cash and jewels.
A former friend claimed the serial killer had gambling and alcohol addictions sparked after he won a £90,000 fortune on newspaper competition Spot the Ball.
In March 1996 Cooper had also used a shotgun and knife to attack a group of teenagers, raping a 16-year-old girl and indecently assaulting a 15-year-old.
He will stay in prison for the rest of his life.

David Morris

Swansea Police/PADavid Morris
David Morris
David Morris was handed four life sentences after he brutally bludgeoned a family of women to death with a pole in South Wales’ worst mass murder.
Nurse Mandy Power, 34, her two young daughters Katie, 10, and Emily, eight, and her 80-year-old disabled mother Doris Dawson were horrifically killed in June 1999, in Clydach, near Swansea.
Morris murdered Mrs Dawson as she lay in her bed before he lurked in wait for the rest of the family to return.
The Swansea builder was jailed for life for the second time in 2006 after a prior conviction was quashed.

But in 2014 a leading academic claimed to have found fresh DNA evidence on the murder weapon that called Morris’ guilt into question, which was is the subject of a fresh appeal to the Criminal Cases Review Comission.
Morris’ sister Debra Thomas said: “My brother is applying to the CCRC because he’s an innocent man. He has always maintained his innocence and we have never doubted him.
“We’re not standing by my brother through blind faith or loyalty. We know he’s not capable of committing such a crime and there is absolutely no evidence against him.”

Matthew Hardman

Depraved Matthew Hardman stabbed 90-year-old Mabel Leyshon to death in a horrific ‘vampire killing’ in November 2001, in Llanfairpwll, Anglesey.
He performed a gruesome ritual, cutting her heart out, placing it on a silver platter and then drinking her blood.
Hardman, who had been Mabel’s paperboy, also placed pokers in the shape of a cross in front of her body.
He was just 17.

Hardman was obsessed with becoming a vampire and believed killing would help him achieve this.
A jury found him unanimously guilty after a two-week trial and the teenager was locked up for life.

Malcolm Green

Double killer Malcolm Green
Double killer Malcolm Green
The Cardiff man was dubbed the "Body in the Bags" killer after he was handed a whole life sentence for his murder of New Zealander Clive Tully in 1991.
Clive's torso, head and limbs were found in bags in Rogerstone and St Brides Wentlooge, the marshlands between Cardiff and Newport.
The victim was identified after a newspaper graphic artist produced a computer-enhanced photograph.
Green committed the grisly murder just two years after he had been released from another life term for the murder of a Cardiff prostitute in 1971.
The victim had also been cut up.
It was recommended that he serve a life sentence - but the Home Secretary gave him a whole life tarrif.
It later emerged Green's bloodlust and obsession with mutilation may have been triggered by seeing his younger brother decapitated by a train when he was just 12.

Other murderers serving life sentences in the UK

Around 70 prisoners have been issued with whole life tariffs in the UK since it was introduced in 1983, although some of them were convicted of their crimes before that date and some have since died in prison.
Moors Murderer Ian Brady
Some of the most infamous prisoners believed to be serving whole life sentences include one of the Moors murderers, Ian Brady. Brady was convicted in May 1966 of murdering three children between 1963 and 1965. He and accomplice Myra Hindley later confessed to two more murders in1987.
They buried the bodies on Saddleworth Moor, near Manchester.
Brady was convicted just six months after the abolition of the death penalty and is currently at Ashworth high security psychiatric hospital in Merseyside.
The youngest person to be handed a life sentence is Jamie Reynolds, at the age of 23. Reynolds murdered 17-year-old Georgia Williams after luring her to his parent's home and taking photos of her body to keep as macabre trophies in Shropshire.
Jamie Reynolds who strangled Georgia Williams and dumped her body in woodland before fleeing to Scotland.

He then dumped her body in Wrexham in 2013.
Reynolds has appealed to the ECHR to overturn his sentence which is set to take place this year.
Peter Sutcliffe, the Yorkshire Ripper, will never be released from custody after his appeal was overruled and he was deemed fit to return to prison.
The serial killer is currently in HM Prison Frankland in Durham for murdering 13 women.
Peter Sutcliffe, the Yorkshire Ripper
Sutcliffe claimed his murder spree, which took place between 1975 and 1980, was inspired by the voice of God who had told him to kill prostitutes.
He was eventually caught after being arrested for driving false number plates.
Triple murderer Arthur Hutchinson was the first prisoner in Britain to challenge his whole life sentence. He gate crashed a wedding reception in Sheffield in 1983, killed the bride's parents and brother and raped a teenage guest.
Hutchinson lost his appeal.
