Llandudno,North Wales - Llandudno couple in lucky escape from flat fire

The fire service were called to deal with a flat blaze in Llandudno

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service say a cigarette was to blame for the blaze which broke out at 1.50am in Lloyd Street

A couple had a lucky escape after a fire broke out in their bedroom during the early hours of this morning.
The flat on Lloyd Street, Llandudno caught fire after a cigarette was left burning and ignited the bedroom curtains.
The couple, who alerted North Wales Fire and Rescue Service at 1.50am today (October 3) managed to get out of the building unharmed.
No other rooms in the flat were damaged.
Two appliances from Llandudno rushed to the scene, taking just under half an hour to tackle the blaze.
The fire service called for an ambulance to be sent to the scene, but it was not required.
A spokesman from North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: “The fire was accidental and was caused by a cigarette.
“The two people involved were not transported to hospital – the ambulance was cancelled prior to arrival.
“Smoke alarms save lives and give you extra time to escape in the event of a fire in the home.

Holyhead,Anglesey,North Wales - Family of manslaughter victim Dave Jones say 'no sentence would ever be justice for us'

THE family of Holyhead manslaughter victim Dave Jones have said that no sentence would ever be justice for them.
Reading a statement outside court on Tuesday, widow Amanda Jones’ brother Justin McGrady read a statement on behalf of the family – including their four children.
Last December, Garrod killed pub landlord Mr Jones, aged 46, at The Blossoms Pub at Holyhead, and then climbed up onto a rooftop.
Mr McGrady said the family were pleased that the court process had come to an end.
“However, the sentence of Peter Garrod will never be justice to our family as it will never bring Dave back.
“No sentence would ever be justice for us.”
He said that not only had the family had to come to terms with losing Dave in such a brutal way, they had the agony of having to wait until today for closure.
“This has put a massive strain on us,” he said.
“We have been unable to grief properly with this constantly hanging over us.”
He said that the family felt that the court process had been very one sided in favour of the defendant and had not taken them fully into consideration as the victim’s family.
“We have had to go through a range of emotions and while to everyone else today may appear as though this is the end, for us this is just a start.
They would soon have the anniversary of Dave’s death which was going to be an extremely difficult time.
He said that they would like people to remember Dave for himself and not for him to be labelled as a pub landlord.
“He was a wonderful husband, father, brother and friend to many,” he said.
“No words can ever explain how amazing he was.
“He was a great family man and out rock and through no fault of his own he has been taken away from us.
“He is going to miss so many things in life. He will miss all of his children growing up and the milestones which we as a family will go through.
“We now have to face all these things without him.”

Bangor,North Wales - Bangor residents tormented by boy racers trigger city-wide crackdown on anti-social drivers

BANGOR residents who are tormented by boy racers have triggered a city-wide crackdown on anti-social drivers.
People living on Caernarfon Road put up with drivers revving their engines, sounding horns, playing loud music and racing up and down the road until the early hours on a daily basis.
North Wales Police have launched a huge clamp down on anti-social drivers throughout the city in response to a torrent of recent complaints from residents, who say they are losing sleep and fear for their safety.
Resident Steven Evans, who has had cans of beer thrown at him from car windows outside his home, said: “We don’t get five minutes of quiet, it’s a nightmare.
“We’re just banging our heads against the wall.
“It’s not a good place to live at the moment.”
Mr Evans said the noise and disturbance starts at about 7pm and does not end until 2am.
Eirian Roberts, chair of Coed Mawr Glanadda Community Group, has lived on Caernarfon Road for more than 10 years.
She said: “They have cruises which often involve side by side racing, handbrake turns, doughnuts, time trials and high noise levels.
“They tend to use the retail park car parks on which to congregate.
“It is a public nuisance and very anti-social.”
Police have identified car parks and streets off Caernarfon Road, the Plas Llwyd car park, behind the old Boots store and Maesgeirchen as hotspots which will be targetted as part of Operation Monk.
Sgt Andrew McGregor said: “Over recent months we have received many complaints ranging from drivers revving their engines, driving at high speed and generally acting in an anti-social manner behind the wheel by doing handbrake turns and wheel spins.
“Clearly this is having an effect on local residents, however people can be reassured that we are on the look-out for anybody driving dangerously.
“Those found to be breaking the law face having their vehicles seized from them and face prosecution.”
Elin Walker-Jones, Gwynedd councillor for the Glyder Ward, said: “I know members of the community will be very pleased action is being take.
“I look forward to seeing how successful the operation is in the long term.”

Prestayn,North Wales - Man jailed after leaving victim with life-threatening injuries after attack

Jordan Cretney
A MAN man suffered life threatening injuries when he was attacked in Prestatyn High Street.
Mr Sean Roberts struck his head on the ground after he received a single punch and ended up with a brain injury.
Mold Crown Court was told today (THURS) that it had a catastrophic effect on his life.
The attacker, defendant Jordan Cretney, 22, said to have taken alcohol and cannabis, claimed he did not remember what he had done.
Cretney, of Canterbury Drive in Prestatyn, admitted wounding and a separate assault matter on another man on the same night.
He was jailed for 33 months and a ten year restraining order was made under which he is not to have any contact with Mr Roberts or the second victim, Joshua Maher.
Judge Rhys Rowlands, sitting at Mold Crown Court, said that Cretney appeared to have spent much of his time on saturday June 27 drinking and smoking cannabis, such that he now said that he had no recollection of what he had done in the early hours of the following morning.
What was clear is that in that state he attacked two entirely innocent young men, one of whom had suffered a serious brain injury.
It left Mr Roberts with life threatening injuries and life changing consequences,” Judge Rowlands told him.
He and Mr Maher had the misfortune to come across the defendant in his condition and he simply lost his temper for no reason.
The defendant struck Mr Maher when he was minding his own business, he made it clear he did not want trouble but he was pursued across the road and punched in the face.
The defendant then turned his attention to a group involving Mr Roberts and his father – who witnessed what occurred.
Cretney adopted a boxing stance, no doubt proud of what he had just done – and refused to calm down.
He threw a powerful punch that caught Mr Roberts to his head and he fell straight back, hitting his head on the ground.
“It was a completely cowardly drunken assault,” said Judge Rowlands.
Mr Roberts had suffered ongoing consequences.
But for the expertise of the paramedics who arrived at the scene and the staff of Glan Clwyd Hospital and the specialist hospital in Stoke then he could easily have died, he said. The defendant would then be sentenced for manslaughter.
Simon Rogers, prosecuting, said the victim had spent six days in the hospital at Stoke and the injuries had seriously affected his life
Mr Rogers read a victim impact statement to the court in which Mr Roberts said the fact that he survived the attack was due to the skill of the NHS medical staff for which he would be “for ever grateful.”
“However I am a changed man, physically, emotionally and financially,” he said.
The inestimable effect on his health and livelihood now and in the future was a nightmare.
“Every time I look in the mirror I see the physical scar and the indentation of the brain injury on my skull,” he said,
“This will be a constant reminder of the physical trauma I suffered.”
Every day he suffered head aches and balance problems and he reliant on strong pain relief.
“I have the daily fear of a seizure and I am anxious of being alone,” he said.
“My clarity of thought and speech had been affected.”
Mr Roberts told how he could tolerate noise and crowds, he had vivid nightmares, did not sleep and felt constantly tired.
He was previously easy going and relaxed but he was now on edge and anxious.
That has been made worse by his current inability to drive or work as a self employed gas and plumbing engineer.
Andrew Downey, defending, said that it was a single blow with catastrophic effects. His client was genuinely sorry and his only explanation was that his drink had been spiked.
He did not wish to minimise the effects of his action, was very sorry and wished to apologise.

Engedi will move from its current venue within the Imperial Hotel building, on Station Road, to Builder Street in Llandudno
A POPULAR community arts association is to close its doors in Colwyn Bay after its premises came under new ownership.

Engedi, which offers a number of services to the community including a drop in centre and family space, will move from its current venue within the Imperial Hotel building, on Station Road, to Builder Street in Llandudno.

John Strickland, former director of Redway Estates Ltd, which owns the building, confirmed that a change in shareholders meant there had technically been a change of ownership over the site, and he believed the new owner intended to put the property to residential use.

Gavin Mart, founder of Engedi, said: “We’re starting a creative partnership with the Great Orme Brewery to develop an artisan hub on Builder Street, which will be a creative space with a coffee bar and craft beer centre to be launched in mid November.

“It is going to be a shame to lose the venue in Colwyn Bay - there just doesn’t seem to be a way forward but we’re looking forward to new opportunities in Llandudno.”

Dave Peacock, who has been going to Engedi for more than two years, said: "It's been a place where peple can meet. It uses the arts as a core function but its not even that - this place does enrich people's lives.”

Engedi’s next event, which Mr Mart said will offer people a taste of things to come, will be at Conwy Feast on October 24, where the association will have an accoustic music venue at Capel Tabernacl in Conwy from 6pm to 8pm.

A planning application to create 17 flats within the building was submitted to Conwy County Council for by Redway Estates in 2012 and approved after a decision from the Wales Planning Inspectorate.

A fifth UK jihadist fighting for Islamic State militants in Syria has been added to a UN sanctions list.
Aseel Muthana, from Cardiff, followed his older brother Nasser - who is already on the UN's list - in travelling to Syria in early 2014.
From Syria the 18-year-old told the BBC in an online interview last year: "I am willing to die but Allah knows the truth behind the words."
He faces a travel ban and a freeze of his assets.
The other four UK jihadists fighting or recruiting for Islamic State militants in Syria who are subject to UN sanctions at the UK's request are: Aseel's brother, Nasser Muthana, from Cardiff, Omar Hussain from High Wycombe, Aqsa Mahmood from Glasgow and Sally-Anne Jones from Chatham in Kent.
The move is a new tactic to stem the flow of recruits to the IS group.

At least 700 Britons have travelled to support or fight for jihadist groups in Syria and Iraq, according to British police. About half have since returned to the UK.
The UN sanctions regime was set up to tackle suspected al-Qaeda terrorism and extended to IS.
