They immediately cordoned off the area while forensic officers went to work and the road remained closed until late afternoon.
An incident room was set up at Sandfields Police Station.
Speaking yesterday, Detective Superintendent Paul Hurley of the South Wales Police Specialist Crime Investigations Team said: "We are investigating the death of a man whose body was discovered in a lane behind Thomas Street, at the rear of Briton Ferry Workingmen's Club.
"The body has yet to be identified and a post mortem examination has been arranged.
"I would appeal to anyone who has seen or heard any suspicious activity or disturbance in this area of Briton Ferry on Tuesday or Wednesday to contact police."
Also speaking yesterday, residents expressed their shock at the find so close to their homes.
Andy Carter said: "I live just opposite the road, and I only really knew what had happened this morning when I saw the police tape.
"People were talking about it in the shop, and everyone is quite shocked about what has happened. You don't expect it to happen around here."
Another resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "Someone from the Workingmen's Club apparently found the body in the lane across the way this morning.
"The police closed our road down and we couldn't get out, and people couldn't get in. It was scary, especially when we knew what had happened.
"It's just not nice to know that this is going on in our area, because it was once a quiet and lovely place to live in."
Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 quoting occurrence number 1600005773.
