North Wales is getting fatter survey reveals

The number of fat people in North Wales has reached a record high with almost 60% of all adults classed as obese or overweight.

Results of a major health survey published today reveal the region is getting fatter and unhealthier, but binge drinking levels have fallen to an all-time low.

The Welsh Health Survey carried out by the Welsh Government shows 58% of people living in the region are classed as being overweight or obese - the highest figure ever recorded - with 22% of that total classed as obese.

Denbighshire is the fattest part of the region with 21% obese and 61% in total classed as overweight.

A person is judged to be obese if they have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or more.

Gwynedd has, with 53%, the least amount of overweight adults in North Wales.

The survey show that we are also eating unhealthily with just 34% managing to eat their five-a-day

This is the worst level of healthy eating since the records started back in 2008.

Three in 10 people in North Wales also admit to doing less than 30 minutes of exercise a week.

One positive piece of good news to come out of the report is that North Walians are binge drinking less to an all-time low of 24%.

North Wales, at 22%, has the second highest level of smokers in the country - up to 2% on the previous year.

Minister for Social Services and Public Health Rebecca Evans, said the smoking signs showed that the people of Wales had embraced a change in culture around smoking.

She said: “While the results of the survey show signs of improvement – especially in regards to smoking – there are still areas where there is work to be done.

“We need to make more progress on obesity and activity levels, and I am confident our decision to integrate grassroots sport and health policy will help us do this.

“We will continue to support people to take small steps to improve their lifestyle and to reduce the risk of preventable illness.”

A young boy has been rushed to hospital after being bitten by a snake while running along sand dunes.

Macey Roberts, from Wrexham, was bitten by an adder while out playing with his sister, Holly, near Pwllheli beach on Monday.

He’s now been left with two holes in his foot while his leg has turned black all the way up to his stomach,

Macey, 13 and Holly, 15, were running along the dunes when he felt something get stuck in his foot and thought he’d stood on a needle.

But when Holly took a closer look she realised that her brother had been bitten by an adder which was hiding in the dunes.

She called her parents, Emma and Andy Roberts, who were on the beach.

Emma said: “We think he must have stood on the adder by mistake and it bit him in retaliation.

“Thankfully he managed to get to the golf club where they called an ambulance.

“By the time we arrived Macey was very drowsy and lethargic, he was so pale, he really did look horrendous and was virtually unconscious.

“We waited there for the rapid response team and then he was taken to Ysbyty Gwynedd and was in kept the resuscitation department.

“He had to be put on a heart monitor and have his blood pressure monitored.

“He’s also had to have an x-ray because a piece of the snake’s fang is still stuck in his foot.

“Doctors were reluctant to give him the anti-venom to begin with because of the possible side affects, but it was clear by midnight that he needed it so he had that as well as morphine for the pain.

“He’s been violently sick, he has two holes in his foot and his leg up to his stomach is black.

“It’s all been very frightening because he has been so ill.”

Emma now wants to warn others that adders and other snakes could be hiding in the grass at this time of the year.

She says they are also a risk to pets, as people frequently walk their dogs in this area.

The mother of two has now praised the staff at the golf club who “went above and beyond” to help, as well as the staff at Ysbyty Gwynedd who have been taking care of Macey since the accident.

Linda Dykes from Ysbyty Gwynedd’s Emergency Department said: “We’ve seen several cases of people being bitten by adders in the last few weeks, it’s already more than we saw throughout the whole of 2015.

“It’s usually the case that kids accidentally stand on them or people try to pick them up.

“Adders will never attack, but they will defend themselves.

“They’re very quick, I don’t think people realise how fast they are, and their bites can be very unpleasant and dangerous.

“My advice would be to keep out of sand dunes, stay away from high-risk areas and don’t touch them.”

Holywell,North Wales - Police hunt after man is stabbed in Holywell

A man was stabbed in Nant Eos in Holywell

A man was stabbed in Holywell last night.

Police are investigating the incident which happened in Nant Eos at 10.15pm, where the victim suffered two stab wounds.

The man was taken to hospital for treatment and is in a stable condition.

Inspector Ceri Hawe of North Wales Police said: “North Wales Police are investigating an incident that occurred in Nant Eos, Holywell , at around 10.15pm last night, where a male was discovered having suffered two stab wounds that required hospital treatment.

“The male is in a stable condition.”

Inspector Hawe also appealed for any witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.

A man has been charged with assault following an incident in Denbighshire.

The man from Flintshire , who is in his early fifties, was arrested by North Wales Policeafter an attack on Water Street in Rhyl on May 30.

Officers detained the man shortly after the incident which took place outside Bar Bow, just after midnight .

He has since been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and will appear before Prestatyn magistrates later this month.

The victim, suffered injuries to the face and was taken to Ysbyty Glan Clwyd .

A North Wales Police spokesman said: "A Flintshire man in his early 50’s was arrested nearby shortly after.

"He has since been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and will appear before Prestatyn magistrates later this month.”

Three sheepdogs have been shot after the latest attack on livestock.

A farmer shot the dogs in south Gwynedd yesterday after he caught them worrying a flock of sheep, the North Wales Police rural crime team told the Daily Post.

That means eight dogs have been lawfully killed since the weekend after a string of incidents across the region.

Sgt Rob Taylor from the rural crime time said the constant attacks are leaving farmers across “devastated” and they are “tying up” valuable police resources.

“We dealt with five dogs attacking sheep over the weekend and there’s three more now, making eight in a few days – it’s sad. When is this going to stop?”

“It’s quite unusual to get sheepdogs involved in sheep attacks as usually it’s huskies.

“An officer is on the way down there to investigate and we’ll check the chips to try and identify the dogs.”

Sgt Taylor added: ““Dog owners need to be aware of the consequences – either their dog is going to be lawfully shot or they’ll end up in court and their dog will be euthanised and they’ll be hit with a heavy fine.

“The farmers also have to keep dealing with the devastation and it’s horrific for the sheep many who end up with their faces torn off and limbs missing.

“I keep saying there are no winners in this – there really aren’t.

“It is also tying up our team when we could be looking at other issues that are happening.

“I’ve had enough. It has to stop.”

Over the weekend another farmer was forced to shoot dead a dog after it attacked his animals in Llanrwst.

Swansea,South Wales - Teenagers break into Gower College Swansea and cause £15,000-worth of damage

THREE teenagers who broke into a Swansea college caused around £15,000-worth of damage, a court has heard.

The trio smashed windows, damaged doors and fire exits, and searched cupboards at Gower College Swansea's Gorseinon campus.

Liam Darnbrough and Rhys Shearan, both aged 18, and a youth who cannot be named for legal reasons, ran-off when they heard police arrive at the scene - but were chased across nearby fields by officers and caught.

Darnbrough, of Windsor Terrace, Gorseinon and Shearan, of Heol Emrys, Penlan, and the youth pleaded guilty to committing burglary with intent to steal on April 1 when they appeared at Swansea Magistrates Court today.

The court heard the intruders entered three separate buildings at the Belgrave Road campus, smashing windows, damaging internal doors, ripping the front panel off the college's alarm control system, and damaging fire doors in the library causing an "enormous" amount of damage to the interior and causing inconvenience for staff and students. The total value of the damage caused by the trio was put at around £15,000.

The court heard details of a probation report into Shearan which said that on the night in question the 18-year-old's partner and child and gone to bed and, as he "was feeling wide awake", he went out. While taking a short-cut across the college grounds with his co-defendants he saw a window open and "decided to climb in to have a look around".

The report said the 18-year-old "expressed genuine remorse" for what he had done.

The probation report into Darnbrough said he had been walking in Gorseinon on the night in question when he got a message on social media asking him to meet up. In his report he said he had only entered the buildings to get his co-defendants from inside.

District judge Neil Thomas, sitting in the magistrates court, said the guilty pleas were a sign of the defendants' contrition.

He sentenced Shearan and Darnbrough each to a 12 month community order and 120 hours of unpaid work. Darnbrough will also have to complete a rehabilitation course.

They were each also ordered to pay £500 compensation to the college for the damage they caused.

The youth will be sentenced at Swansea Youth Court on Thursday.

Llanelli,South Wales - Hotel owner blackmailed and threatened by gunman

Police investigate the incident in September 2015.

A LLANELLI hotel owner was blackmailed by an armed man who threatened to make allegations against him.

Andrew Deakin, aged 32, had a gun tucked into the back of his trousers when he forced Paul Francis to count out £300 inside the Halfway hotel in Llanelli.

And his brother George Deakin, aged 40, was outside the hotel as back up and armed with a baseball bat.

Andrew Deakin, of Corner House, Port Talbot Road, Port Talbot, admitted blackmail and was jailed for two and a half years by a judge at Swansea crown court.

George Deakin, of Dinas Road, Baglan, admitted possessing an offensive weapon and was jailed for 12 months.

Stephen Rees, prosecuting, said Andrew Deakin had been a pupil at Ffynone House School, Swansea, when Mr Francis had been an assistant teacher there.

Years later their paths crossed again.

By then Mr Francis had taken over the Halfway hotel and the pair decided to extract money from him.

Mr Rees said police were able to trace text messages sent by the brothers.

Andrew Deakin to George Deakin, "I feel sick and on top of the moon at the same time. We are going to take him for every penny he's got. He's inherited the biggest pub in Llanelli from his parents. This is going to be awesome."

GD to AD:"I have three guns and a baseball bat."

AD to GD, "I'll message him to pick me up."

Mr Rees said Mr Francis was ordered to drive to a cash point while Andrew Deakin sat in the back holding an imitation firearm. George Deakin followed in a silver Mercedes.

Once there Mr Francis realised he had not taken his debit card and Andrew Deakin told him to drive to the Half Way Hotel "and made various threats during the journey."

Andrew Deakin told him, "Things could get more sinister if there isn't money at the hotel."

Once there Deakin tucked the gun into the back of his trousers and walked Mr Francis into the hotel, where Mr Francis handed over £300.

Meanwhile, said Mr Rees, George Deakin had emerged from the Mercedes holding the baseball bat.

Andrew Deakin seemed to signal to him that there would be no need for violence as he had got some money, but as they left the hotel they warned Mr Francis, "We will be back. Keep your mouth shut."

The following day, Andrew Deakin sent Mr Francis a message reading, "Are you sorting it out or do we have to come up there?"

Mr Francis contacted the police and the brothers were arrested.

Andrew Deakin said the £300 had been a "pay off" and not the result of blackmailing. He said he armed himself with a gun for self protection.

George Deakin, once a professional jockey and later a chef, said he had followed his brother to the hotel to ensure his safety.

Brian Richardson, the barrister representing Andrew Deakin, said it had always been his case that he had a complaint about Mr Francis dating back to his time at Ffynone House.

James Hartson, for George Deakin, said he had acted as an enforcer "in this very foolish enterprise."

The judge, Mr Recorder Nicholas Gareth Jones, told the brothers, "This was not a spur of the moment incident. You set him up."
