Glyndŵr University where Syed Ahmed was studying at the time of the knife attack
A STUDENT stabbed his housemate with a kitchen knife after a row broke out.
Syed Ahmed grabbed the blade and confronted his friend Aimen Zaiden after he had complained to the defendant about the volume of his music at their home on Bradley Road, Wrexham.
Ahmed, who had been studying marketing at Glyndwr University, brandished the weapon before waving it at his victim and “making stabbing motions”, it was heard.
The 23-year-old, currently living in London, yesterday pleaded guilty to stabbing Mr Zaiden in the arm on April 14 last year.
He was sentenced to 12-months in prison, suspended for 18 months.
Prosecutor Michael Whitty said Ahmed and Mr Zaiden exchanged swear words after Ahmed had been challenged about the music volume.
Ahmed then shut the door before returning armed with the weapon.
“He (Mr Zaiden) heard the defendant come out if his room and he had armed himself with a knife," said Mr Whitty.
“He began squaring up to Mr Zaiden and then brandishing the knife, waving it at him and then made stabbing motions.”
Mr Whitty said a struggle broke out between the pair and Mr Zaiden sustained a stab wound to the arm and also injured his foot.
"The defendant then got up and went downstairs. He was described as being in a dishevelled state and seemed to be under the influence of something,” added Mr Whitty.
The court heard the knife had a blade about two/three inches long and that the attack had left Mr Zaiden with a small scar.
"Fortunately it was not serious but a weapon was used,” said Mr Whitty.
Andrew Green, defending, said Ahmed was sorry this had happened and understood the seriousness of the offence. He said he was a young man with a close family around him.
The court heard Ahmed, who was one year into his course, had been suspended from the university following the incident.
He called the police himself following the attack and told officers where the knife was.
Recorder Huw Rees said: “This was a silly argument between you and a one-time friend which should have been resolved.
“It did not need the exchange of swear words, neither did it need for you to arm yourself with a knife, brandishing it and waving it at him.
“It only inflamed the issue.”
The court heard Ahmed had plans of becoming a tailor in the future and Mr Rees said sending him straight to prison could “dash his dreams”.
He added: “You were 22 at the time and you lost your place at further education in Wrexham, which is punishment in itself.
“This is also an isolated incident arising from the friction of young men living together in rented accommodation.”
Mr Rees also ordered that Ahmed also carries out 200 hours of unpaid work.
