A Chinese man followed and sexually assaulted a girl of 16 in an attack “which every parent dreads,” a jury has heard.
Dawei Zhang, aged 32, of Llys Madoc, Towyn, who Caernarfon crown court was told had lived in Britain after arriving on a study visa in 2009, was found guilty by a jury of the touching which he denied.
He was remanded in custody for a pre-sentence report.
Outlining the case, prosecuting counsel Andrew Green said the teenager was grabbed in the summer of 2014. Zhang was found quickly by police and identified by the victim in an ID parade.
Mr Green said: ”This case is about something which every parent dreads - a teenage girl followed by a stranger and then sexually assaulted.”
The youngster was going to meet friends on the beach at Colwyn Bay when she noticed she was being followed, in daylight.
Mr Green said Zhang had grabbed her bottom and she asked him what he was doing.
“He replied that he was looking for a new model and wanted her to go back to his house with him and asked for her name and phone number,” the prosecutor alleged.
The quick-thinking girl had pressed a button on her mobile phone which activated a voice recorder and she told Zhang to “get off.”
But he had groped her again and the girl was “shocked, frightened and upset.” She ran off to meet her friends who alerted police.
Counsel said officers arrived within minutes and the victim was crying uncontrollably. She described her assailant as Chinese, “about 30” and wearing a blue and white hooped polo shirt.
Zhang wore one when he was arrested in the town’s Station Road, Mr Green said.
CCTV footage showed him following the girl through the town centre.
The prosecution claimed, despite Zhang’s denial of the offence, his appearance was “distinctive” and there was “compelling” evidence to support the girl’s identification of him as her attacker.
